We often read reports about CO (Carbon Monoxide) poisoning in the press, but it only really hits home when it happens to those close to you.

A friend of one of our team recently had a close call when they heard a beeping noise coming from a CO alarm in their home. They had totally forgotten it was there, sitting on top of a cupboard, but probably saved their lives.

When they heard the beeping they immediately called the number on the back of the alarm. An engineer came to visit their home and reported that their cooker was leaking high levels of carbon monoxide. Without the alarm the outcome could have been fatal.

With very low starting prices for an alarm, there isn’t any reason why you shouldn’t have one in your home. It is also very easy to confuse a CO poisoning with the flu, so make sure you are aware of the following signs:

. Headaches

. Nausea

. Dizziness

. Breathlessness

. Collapsing

. Passing Out

If you smell gas or think there might be a leak:

. Turn off the gas at the meter

. Extinguish naked flames

. Open the windows

. Leave the area

. Seek medical advise if you feel unwell.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – A Visual Guide

The Gas Safe Register recently released this easy to follow guide to demonstrate the warning signs of CO (Carbon Monoxide) Poisoning.

If you are suffering from headaches, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, dizziness, loss of consciousness.

Then you must contact a medical professional ASAP. It can be easy to confuse these signs with a common cold, migraine or the flu, but if you are feeling any of these symptoms then do not risk ignoring them.

To help prevent the possibility of CO poisoning you must install a carbon monoxide detector in your home. It’s also important to remember that if you are a tenant then it is your landlord’s duty to install a CO detector in your home. If they haven’t already done so, contact them immediately – failure to install can come with a heavy fine.

In addition to knowing the signs and installing a CO detector, it’s also vital that you arrange an annual boiler service and gas safety check.
