How to prepare your central heating system for the winter?

Turning on the heating system is what we consider the official start of the cold season. There is no use denying it, once the leaves start falling and the wind is blowing it’s time to crank up the thermostat.

But before you turn the heating system on for the winter, you need to check it’s on good health, and ready to face the new season.

Follow the tips below, and learn how you can prepare your central heating system for the winter:

  1. Bleed your Radiators

Bleeding your radiators is not as complicated as it sounds, it is done to release air which might be trapped in your heating system. If you notice your radiators have cold patches, or the top is cold, this means it’s time for a bleeding.

2. Power Flush the central heating system

If sludge comes out when you bleed your radiators, it’s good to consider a power flush to clear the heating system of dangerous build-up. Build-up of sludge overtime can affect your boiler over time, so it’s a good idea to act as soon as you notice the issue. Baker Smith Gas & Heating Engineers can help.

3. Use Filters

The inside of your radiators is vulnerable to corrosion overtime. To prepare your heating system for the winter, and keep your boiler safe, you can use specialised products like inhibitor or boiler filters. Want one installed – Our professional engineers can help.

4. Insulate you Home

Save your heating system and reduce your bills by insulating your home, making sure the that heat does not escape through the windows and door gaps.

5. Test your Thermostat

Make sure your thermostat is working correctly – switch it on, and you should hear the click and the heating starting right on. Chang the battery back up in the thermostat to ensure your heating will run seamlessly in the winter.

6. Invest in a Small Thermostat

If you haven’t got one already consider investing in a smart thermostat. It will help you reduce your bills, and be more environmentally friendly, as you can set it to turn on based on when you’ll be home.
